Open Figure Drawing is Moving to the Delavan

Open Figure Drawing has found a new home! We’re moving to Delavan Studios, room 413.

Our last session at the Westcott is April 24, 2024.

Room 413 will be ready by June 1. We are unsure of what we will do between April 24 and June 1. If room 413 is ready early, then we will start sessions at the Delavan before June 1. In between, we may take a break.

More info about changes to the sessions that will come with the move will be added soon.

John Dowling Art Center, temporary location

May 1, 7 – 10 pm
1632 Hawley Ave, Syracuse NY

Starting May 1, Open Figure Drawing will meet at the John Dowling Art Center, located at 1632 Hawley Ave, until our space in Delavan Studios is ready. This includes our Sunday May 19 Long Pose, 1 – 3 pm.

Hawley Ave’s east end terminates at Greenway Ave. The Dowling Art Center is on that corner. The other end of that block as at Teall Ave.

Enter: Enter through the silver metal door. The door is locked. Ring the bell to the right of the door to be let in.
The black doors go to someone’s studio.

Parking: There is not as much parking at this location. They have a small parking lot, and street parking can be crowded at night. You may have to park on Greenway Ave

Equipment: We will have our collapsable black easels but won’t have most of our usual equipment. The center has about 10 chairs we can use, and a large table that can fit 2 or more artists. You may want to bring your own easel if you have one.

We hope you will be able to join us at this temporary location.

At the end of the show, please pick up your artwork directly from the Edgewood Gallery, on Saturday, August 10, 10 am – 2 pm. If you’re not able to pick up your artwork at this time, contact us and we will find an alternate solution.
If you want to exhibit sculpture, contact us so we can make sure there’s space.
    * Our new location.
  4. Artwork must have identification and contact information on the back. Include your name and phone number (or e-mail or street address). Optionally, include a title, media, and size information. We also suggest signing and dating your work.
  5. All physical work must be professionally framed or of the same quality. We usually only require that artwork is framed & have a wire for hanging from a picture hook. Unlike our usual group shows, the Edgewood Gallery is a professional gallery. Please check with us if you are unsure about the frame you are using.
Sculpture is also welcome (and does not need to be framed).
  6. Work can be for sale, but does not have to be. Edgewood Gallery takes a 33.3% commission on all sales.
  7. Package your artwork carefully.
Project your art with a minimum of a piece of cardboard large enough to cover the glass. Protect the corners. Place the artwork in a back, or some other protective covering. Be sure to mark all the packing materials with your name or initials. This helps us repackage it when we take the show down.
Group Show at the Gear Factory
Gear Factory front door

200 S Geddes St, Syracuse
Saturday, June 8, 2024, 3 pm – 11 pm

Open Figure Drawing will have a small space in the the R-Evolution art show at the Gear Factory (event page is on Facebook).

This takes place just before our 35th Anniversary Show at the Edgewood Gallery. For that show we are accepting 1 art work to hang in the show and 2 additional digital submissions for the catalog. You can frame 1 of those digital submissions, or frame something else for the Gear Factory show. If you are unable participate in both shows, please chose the 35th Anniversary show, because we want 35 artists for that show.

We may be closed in May due to our move to Delavan Studios. We need to have the artwork by May 31, so we can hang it that night.
You can bring your artwork…
• to the the WCC any time up until our last session there on April 24
• to our Themed Drawing session at the Atrium, Sunday May 5, 1 – 3 pm
• or contact us for other options.

Since we only have a small space, we will keep you informed to let you know if our space is full.

At the end of the show, we will bring artwork to our new space, 413 Delavan

Rules:

  1. Anyone who has come to a drawing session within the last year may submit one artwork.
Art must not have been in a previous show.
Submit an entry form with your artwork.
  2. Deliver artwork to the Westcott Community Center by Wednesday, April 24, 7 – 10 pm, or to the Atrium, Sunday, May 5, 1 – 3 pm, during the Themed Drawing session.
Or contact us for other options. Board member Dan Shanahan is coordinating this show.
After the show, we will bring your artwork to our new space at 413 Delavan Studios.
  3. Artwork must have identification and contact information on the back. Include your name and phone number or e-mail. Optionally, include a title, media, and size information. We also suggest signing and dating your work. The entry form has an identification tag.
  4. All work must be framed & have a wire for hanging from a pegboard hook.
Our gear factory space uses pegboard. Please don’t use sawtooth hangers or small rings. They may not hang well from pegboard hooks.
  5. Work can be for sale, but does not have to be. Sales will be handled between the buyer and the individual artist. Include with your artwork the necessary information for a buyer to contact you.
  6. Package your artwork carefully.
Be sure to mark all the packing materials with your name or initials. This helps us repackage it when we take the show down.
OFD is Looking for Volunteers and Board Members
“Our Founder” photo by Larry Hoyt

Open Figure Drawing can always use additional volunteers.

We have had a low attendance since the pandemic, so we can use help reaching out to new potential participants. We’ll need them to help us afford to pay our rent when we find a new location.

We can use help with our regularly scheduled Wednesday sessions, and our travelling sessions. This typically involves setting up and tearing down.

We can use help documenting sessions by photographing participant artwork, and by photographing artists and the model in action during clothed sessions.

We can also use new board members. Board members are volunteers who keep OFD running. They meet monthly and do all of OFD’s planning.

If you are interested in helping, contact us, or talk to the host during any OFD session.

Digital Drawing Tools Available
iPad

We have an 11″ iPad Pro and a 12.9″ iPad Pro with Procreate and a 16″ Wacom MobileStudio Pro with Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, and Corel Painter available for your use at any WCC session at no additional cost. Just ask the host.

If you’d like some instruction, Tim Oliver-Grow can demo using Procreate on the iPad. Dan Shanahan can demo using PhotoShop on the MobileStudio Pro. Contact us to find out when Tim or Dan will be at Open Figure Drawing.
